Manning’s work is on the side of technology that is seamlessly functional. His paintings involve a semblance that is genuinely weird and simultaneously realized in the immediacy of an experience that it is not really a “representation” of something outside of itself. Their technology is its own supra-organic life, not its own dysfunction. They access the taste of Roman cabbage before the invention of painting. It’s software priming out its own soft, viscous fluidity. Even though these objects by Manning, these “paintings,” may appear banal, they coalesce their vaporous concrescence in some strange kind of topographic liminality. They are resting on some kind of constitutive fissure that makes the distinction between abstract and concrete obsolete, not the technology of which it feeds (back into). They are “producing presentation,” mere presentation, one might add, deterritorialized into a generic vision of sorts. It is not painting without organs, nor with organs, but without the without. An asyndetic connection, waves: painting ≈≈ organs.
